PAL SECAM

Standards Converter

Standards converter boxes modify an input signal in one format (e.g. SECAM) to another (e.g PAL) as an output. They range in price from about £90 up to £300+. We have used an Alfaglade Digiview which also removes macrovision encoding found on some DVD and satellite signals. Details can be found on their website. There are other manufacturers around such as letropaks . Note: Most converters when linked between a VCR and TV, will lose any On Screen Menu or Teletext information generated from a VCR.

Why would you need a SECAM compatible VCR ?

If you play a SECAM tape (pre-recorded or recorded off French TV) on a PAL only VCR the output signal will lose it's colour information, and therefore will play in B&W on a Multistandard TV. Top end Thomson VCRs sold in the UK used to be PAL/SECAM compatible, but recent models seem to be PAL / NTSC only. If they are SECAM compatible it will be displayed on the unit. (part 1)
